Terrain piece WIP

Wanted to get some rock work and hill pieces done. I envisioned a walkway up the side of a steep hill, and some ascending grade wall walkways, but didn't quite pull it off. I ended up with the same level walkways along the wall sections. Its sectional, for storage, and also may be able to be used with future pieces.
Its made with a combination of 1 inch and 1/2 inch foam pink board. I did the brick work with ink pen, and the cutting/ carving with xacto. One layer of dark acrylic to kill the blue ink from the pen (I really need to get a pen with black ink to save time), and then painted with white acrylic. After that, I'm staining with inks - browns, blacks, and yellows.

2 main pieces, flat center section, and entry piece

Sections put together. The right wall will have a hill behind, but not as tall as the left hill.

Fell Helm update + an OSL Ghost experiment

I prepped a 15mm magician to the same point as Fell Helm, then mixed a grey wash and applied it. The magician was a guinea pig to see how it would turn out, and the wash was pretty heavy. Once it dried you could still see some shading but it was very subtle. Not too noticeable on a 15mm fig.
I diluted the wash and applied it to Fell Helm and it came out with much better results.

Fell Helm back

I'm debating whether to add some flesh color where his right arm comes out of the sleeve. A slight bit of color may actually accent the drab coloring. I will study on it a bit before I varnish.

This is a 15mm ghost from Splintered Light Greater Undead set and my first try at Object Source Lighting (OSL).  I have a Paasche airbrush, but thought I'd try hand brushing since its a small fig.

I applied the yellow wash first and it went on brighter than I anticipated, alarmingly bright, brighter than I could  make the lantern appear. I switched the lantern color from yellow to the brightest green I could find in my wife's tube acrylics. The neon green lantern light looks much better, but not even close to what some painters are achieving.

Okay for a first try and fun to try something new. I have more minis with lanterns, so I will try again. If they don't come out better, then that's what paint stripper is for . LOL.

New 15mm figures painted

I received an order of Splintered Light miniatures from the Dungeon crawl and RPG series. Some nice undead figures I've been lacking - ghosts, wights, some decent vampires, and also some 15mm player character figs - MU's, thieves, ranger types and some pretty good fighting men.
After primering I did a black line shading then a white highlight both with vallejo airbrush paints (They work great with a regular brush).
Then I did the coloring with the amsterdam inks. I'm thinking this method works better on the 15mm figs than trying to shade with just inks. The subtlety of ink shading is just not noticeable on that small of a figure, at least to my eyes.
Probably use these for a Ranger type character.

Witch hunter and a vampire.

I like this figure for a main antagonist so much I already named him (Fell Helm). Definitely has that "Final Boss" look to him. It measures out at 21mm but is well proportioned and will work great for an evil Superhero or Necromancer. So far the mini has been primered, shaded with black, and block highlited with white. I want to do a dark grey for the main cloak color but I'm unsure if that will wipe out the shading. May have to do a dark red.

Found my bats!

I had 3 bats in one of my painted figure boxes so I made some wire mounts for them. They looked pretty good and I thought I had a few more but it took 2 full searches thru all my boxes and I finally found a paper packet with 9 more of them.
They are manufactured by Safari LTD (which has a few mini creatures that go good with 15 or 25mm figs and terrain) and are made of a flexible plastic. They are molded in black and red so I did a light drybrush and made wire mounts for them. Super glued the wire to magnetic strip and they are set to go on my bases.
A great addition for goblins or orcs on the march.

The Free King Highwaye terrain piece

These are terrain pieces I started this weekend. They are 1/2 inch pink board on the top and sides held by 3 core pieces made up of 1 inch pink board. Used 1 1/4 and 2 inch drywall screws to construct and filled with caulk. They are solid enough to do pen and paint work on. I will glue the edges once I finish them.
I etched the brick work with pen and the pavers on top with a shallow cut using an xacto knife then etching with a pen. A rolled up ball of aluminum foil across the sides and top to increase the texture then base coat of mars black acrylic to kill the pen ink color.
I painted almost a dry brush of  titanium white for the brick and pavers. Will be staining with greys, browns and greens to finish.
The rounded edge on one piece fits into the concave of the other, so I can angle the wall to increase the table placement options. We will see if it works.

Piece 2 in progress

Piece 1 awaiting stains.

The best thing about working with foam is adding to it is pretty easy.
I anticipate adding some columns on the sides of the walls and perhaps an access tunnel.

slayer Mauler Haynes and the Reckoning Crew

I've finished up most of the Slayers and put them on character sheets. Names too, but those are subject to change.
