Nocturne backdrop set up

I wanted to do a backdrop that would set a better mood for night time battles with vampires, ghosts and other undead so I needed to make something a bit darker than the other backdrop. Obviously everything can't be pitch black, but I thought a darker backdrop and ground cover and limited scenery color might do the trick. I have a lot of duplicate castings so I may just keep a full set primer grey for night time games.
I had a black micro fiber fleece I laid down for the ground. The backdrop was painted with acrylics and I used the same techniques as the other. The sky color on the right ended up too dark so I lost some tree detail. The left side came out really well.  Luckily my fixed light for the gaming room is to the upper right so the shadowing isn't completely out of whack. I had to mix tube acrylics so I couldnt roller brush and some brush marks and shine are visible. I need to do a flat varnish tomorrow, and may add some clouds.

I think its worth detailing the ground cover a bit to break up the colors and adding a pathway or two.

Battle at the abandoned farm (Solo 15mm skirmish)

Erin of Wite sent out his Screech owl familiar during the night and located the small warband led by the ogre Nakug and his dimbulb younger brother Yokug, that have been tracking his traveling party. The warband is closer than expected and instead of trying to travel through the night, Erin has set up a defense on a hill by an abandoned farm. His fortified Keep is only a half days travel away and if his troops can avoid, or hold off an attack from the roving warband until full light, they can make it to the safety of the Keep.
Dawn is approaching… along with the warband.

The defense. The abandoned farmhouse and the company's supply cart is to the lower left. Archers and Erin of Wite with bodyguards man the center hill. Chainmail infantry are defending the gap to the left and light infantry on the gap to the right.

Waiting for the warband. The archers need to have a good day.

1-50%      1  warband element arrives
 51 - 80%   2 warband elements arrive
      81 - 00%    all 3 warband elements arrive

Goblins on Wargs accompanied by giant bats emerge from the East and spot the company on the hill.

The goblins send a rider to warn the rest of the warband, and then charge the hill.

The wargs fall short in their charge on their move so can't attack this round. The bats, with longer range surround the company and attack, doing minor damage.

The archers wheel and in an awesome volley take out 5 bats, as the light infantry moves up to close the gap between the hills and engage the wargs. The lone warg rider has made contact with the remainder of the warband and leads them toward the battle. The next round the wargs and riders with spears take out both a light and chainmail infantry. They strike back and fell a rider.

Nakug's orc element emerges from the woods to be confronted by a wall that will delay their movement. Yokug and his goblins come in from the East led by the returning Warg rider.

The infantry and wargs continue to battle inflicting damage on each other but no fatalities. The archers turn their attention from the bats, which have become a mere annoyance compared to the threat coming across the field.

The archers take out 3 orcs, but the infantry cannot drive back the wargs and regroup to face the advancing orcs and goblins.

The archers take out another orc as the wargs and infantry are still slugging it out in the gap.

Nakug and the orcs move around the hill to try and flank the archers but find little cover. Yokug, taller than the goblins, is a prime target and takes 5hp damage from Erin's bodyguards crossbow.

During Nakugs flanking move the archers wheel and deliver a 10 hp damage volley at Yokug, and  Erin hoping to turn the tide, releases a magic missile spell at Yokug and scores 5 damage.

Yokug makes his morale check despite taking 20hp damage in one turn. His goblins have crested the East hill and are moving in behind the light infantry.  Nakug and the orc use their move to assault the archers' hill.

Too close to shoot arrows, the archers strike at the orcs with daggers with minor results. The wargs have finally fallen in the gap, but the goblins are too numerous and have the infantry outnumbered and surrounded.

The bats inflict small wounds on Erin, but enough to fell him and the orcs and goblins close in to finish off the infantry.

Obligatory victory photo for Nakug and Yokug's scrapbook as they seize the company's cart full of supplies and treasure.

I used the Odd Encounters skirmish rules for this combat and the Target 20 system ( new to me) really helped speed up the play. I randomly generated the locations and movements of the warband since this was solo play. I anticipated more maneuver by the infantry, but they really got bogged down in the gap with the warg riders. When you roll a bunch of single digits on the d20 thats what happens! If they could have taken out the warg riders they could have moved back and consolidated and let the archers do some damage. Erin had a web spell I was planning on using in one of the gaps to disable some of the warband, but that advantage never materialized.

Son of Snakes and some scorpions.

Still working on the big wall terrain piece, but I had alot of figures come in so I took a painting break. Some I got last weekend and was able to paint a few. Splintered Light 15mm sons of snakes with spears and five crypt scorpions by Essex (I believe). These are a great addition for my desert adventures in addition to the mummies, skeletons and Sons of Annubis I already have. They have yet to get the flat varnish coating. I painted them with inks and the snake mini came out really well with the shading technique I've been using.
I may have gone overboard because I also ordered egyptian villagers and some African porters ( to work as excavators on archeological digs), and some mounted Tauregs from Old Glory.

I forgot,,, I also got some camels!

Have to finish the right side and lower ground, paint and add foliage.

Terrain piece WIP

Wanted to get some rock work and hill pieces done. I envisioned a walkway up the side of a steep hill, and some ascending grade wall walkways, but didn't quite pull it off. I ended up with the same level walkways along the wall sections. Its sectional, for storage, and also may be able to be used with future pieces.
Its made with a combination of 1 inch and 1/2 inch foam pink board. I did the brick work with ink pen, and the cutting/ carving with xacto. One layer of dark acrylic to kill the blue ink from the pen (I really need to get a pen with black ink to save time), and then painted with white acrylic. After that, I'm staining with inks - browns, blacks, and yellows.

2 main pieces, flat center section, and entry piece

Sections put together. The right wall will have a hill behind, but not as tall as the left hill.

Fell Helm update + an OSL Ghost experiment

I prepped a 15mm magician to the same point as Fell Helm, then mixed a grey wash and applied it. The magician was a guinea pig to see how it would turn out, and the wash was pretty heavy. Once it dried you could still see some shading but it was very subtle. Not too noticeable on a 15mm fig.
I diluted the wash and applied it to Fell Helm and it came out with much better results.

Fell Helm back

I'm debating whether to add some flesh color where his right arm comes out of the sleeve. A slight bit of color may actually accent the drab coloring. I will study on it a bit before I varnish.

This is a 15mm ghost from Splintered Light Greater Undead set and my first try at Object Source Lighting (OSL).  I have a Paasche airbrush, but thought I'd try hand brushing since its a small fig.

I applied the yellow wash first and it went on brighter than I anticipated, alarmingly bright, brighter than I could  make the lantern appear. I switched the lantern color from yellow to the brightest green I could find in my wife's tube acrylics. The neon green lantern light looks much better, but not even close to what some painters are achieving.

Okay for a first try and fun to try something new. I have more minis with lanterns, so I will try again. If they don't come out better, then that's what paint stripper is for . LOL.

New 15mm figures painted

I received an order of Splintered Light miniatures from the Dungeon crawl and RPG series. Some nice undead figures I've been lacking - ghosts, wights, some decent vampires, and also some 15mm player character figs - MU's, thieves, ranger types and some pretty good fighting men.
After primering I did a black line shading then a white highlight both with vallejo airbrush paints (They work great with a regular brush).
Then I did the coloring with the amsterdam inks. I'm thinking this method works better on the 15mm figs than trying to shade with just inks. The subtlety of ink shading is just not noticeable on that small of a figure, at least to my eyes.
Probably use these for a Ranger type character.

Witch hunter and a vampire.

I like this figure for a main antagonist so much I already named him (Fell Helm). Definitely has that "Final Boss" look to him. It measures out at 21mm but is well proportioned and will work great for an evil Superhero or Necromancer. So far the mini has been primered, shaded with black, and block highlited with white. I want to do a dark grey for the main cloak color but I'm unsure if that will wipe out the shading. May have to do a dark red.

Found my bats!

I had 3 bats in one of my painted figure boxes so I made some wire mounts for them. They looked pretty good and I thought I had a few more but it took 2 full searches thru all my boxes and I finally found a paper packet with 9 more of them.
They are manufactured by Safari LTD (which has a few mini creatures that go good with 15 or 25mm figs and terrain) and are made of a flexible plastic. They are molded in black and red so I did a light drybrush and made wire mounts for them. Super glued the wire to magnetic strip and they are set to go on my bases.
A great addition for goblins or orcs on the march.
